AVAU was founded by three siblings — Leonardo, Carolina, and Caterina Catalani — the third generation of a family whose roots run deep in the world of perfumery. Their story begins between 1980 and 2000, when their forebears ran the perfumery in Vatican City. In 1998, their parents carried that tradition forward, founding what would become Italy's leading distributor of niche fragrances and cosmetics. The siblings grew up immersed in that knowledge — fragrance was not a luxury but an everyday reality, a ritual, a language. Each morning, the question was never whether you'd packed your bag, but which perfume you'd chosen: a tray of flacons in the family hallway, each one holding a different emotion, a different way to step into the day. That daily ritual taught the three siblings that a fragrance is a promise made to yourself — a conscious choice about which part of your nature you wish to carry outward, and which feeling you want by your side. From this profound, almost philosophical relationship with perfumery, AVAU was born: not as a brand that sells fragrances, but as one that captures emotions in flacons and invites people to follow their intuition, every single day.
AVAU understands fragrance as a space for self-encounter — a quiet place where honesty and emotion meet. Every creation in the collection is conceived not merely to rest on the skin, but to work inward: as a mirror, as a tool for introspection. Caterina Catalani, a trained nose from Grasse and formerly a perfumer at Floris London, translates this philosophy into the composition of each fragrance. The brand's visual language follows the same logic: every scent carries its own texture pattern within the logo — a sensory promise made before the flacon is even opened. The logo itself, a "V" reimagined as a lacquer seal, stands for commitment and integrity. AVAU weaves tradition and contemporary design into an aesthetic that is deeply personal without ever being closed off.

The founders: three siblings, one voice
Leonardo Catalani, Creative Director, is someone who turned a sense of not belonging into a source of strength. Growing up feeling at odds with conventional molds, he found in fragrance a language that defies categorisation — an expressive form that shifts and evolves alongside the person who wears it. As Creative Director of AVAU, he channels that energy into sensory experiences that transcend the ordinary and celebrate individuality. Carolina Catalani, Strategy Director, is the structuring force within the trio. She pairs analytical precision with deep industry expertise, ensuring that the brand's creative vision does not merely dream, but grows and endures. Caterina Catalani is the nose behind the fragrances. Her training in Grasse, the historic heartland of European perfumery, and her time at Floris London shaped her craft. For her, perfume is a bridge between the visible and the invisible — a path to the deepest layers of the self. Together, the three siblings have created a boutique built from fragments of their shared home: the kitchen, the magic tray, a sofa inspired by the frescoes of the Vatican — places that can now be shared with the world.
